Why Projects Matter More Than Marks

One of the most common questions students ask during college is whether marks or skills are more important.

During my first year at NIAT, I realized that both have value.

Good academic performance demonstrates discipline and understanding.

However, projects often provide something equally important.

Proof of ability.

The funny thing is that marks show what students know.

Projects show what students can do.

Employers, clients, and industry professionals are often interested in both.

But when it comes to practical opportunities, projects frequently make the biggest difference.

One thing I noticed is that projects transform knowledge into experience.

Students may learn programming concepts in class.

They may study business strategies.

Or they may understand theoretical frameworks.

A project requires them to apply those concepts to solve real problems.

This process deepens understanding and develops practical skills.

As a first-year student, I quickly realized that learning becomes much more meaningful when students build something tangible.

Another lesson I learned is that projects create evidence of skills.

Many students claim they know a technology or a concept.

A completed project proves it.

The funny thing is that employers often trust demonstrated ability more than self-reported ability.

A working project provides something concrete to discuss during interviews and professional conversations.

One observation I made is that projects develop problem-solving skills.

Real projects rarely work perfectly on the first attempt.

Challenges appear.

Errors occur.

Unexpected situations emerge.

Students learn how to troubleshoot, adapt, and improve.

These experiences build resilience and practical thinking.

The process often becomes more valuable than the final result.

The AI-powered infrastructure monitoring and failure prediction project I have been working on is an example of this.

The project involves technology, problem-solving, research, and continuous improvement.

Every challenge encountered during development creates a learning opportunity.

Projects like these help students develop skills that extend beyond the classroom.

The Gen AI Club also encouraged students to work on projects that combined learning with practical application.

Students explored ideas, built solutions, and collaborated to create meaningful outcomes.

Another important thing I noticed is that projects teach teamwork.

Many projects require collaboration.

Students learn how to communicate effectively.

Share responsibilities.

Resolve disagreements.

And work toward common goals.

The funny thing is that these skills are often just as important as technical knowledge in professional environments.

Another lesson I learned is that projects help students discover interests.

A student may begin a project simply to learn a skill.

During the process, they might discover a passion for Artificial Intelligence, entrepreneurship, design, cybersecurity, or another field.

Projects provide opportunities for exploration that traditional coursework sometimes cannot offer.

The BRAVE Competition reinforced this lesson strongly.

Before achieving success in the 16th business negotiation, there were nearly 15 unsuccessful attempts.

Each attempt felt like a project of its own.

Every failure provided feedback.

Every conversation improved communication skills.

And every setback created a learning opportunity.

The final success was important.

But the lessons learned during the process were even more valuable.

Projects teach students in the same way.

Growth happens through experience rather than perfection.

One observation I made is that projects make students stand out.

Many students may have similar academic records.

Projects create individuality.

They demonstrate initiative, creativity, and practical ability.

A strong portfolio of projects often helps students distinguish themselves from others competing for the same opportunities.

Another thing I learned is that projects build confidence.

Students begin with an idea.

Then transform that idea into something real.

Every completed project proves that they are capable of creating value.

The funny thing is that confidence often comes from building rather than studying.

When students create something meaningful, they begin believing more strongly in their abilities.

Another observation I made is that projects prepare students for future careers.

Professional environments focus on results.

Solutions.

And impact.

Projects provide a preview of that reality.

Students learn how to manage deadlines, handle uncertainty, and deliver outcomes.

Looking back now, I think projects are among the most valuable experiences students can have during college.

Marks are important.

Knowledge is important.

But projects connect knowledge with action.

Years from now, students may not remember every examination question.

But they will remember the solutions they built.

The challenges they solved.

The lessons they learned.

And the confidence they gained.

Because careers are often shaped by what students create, not only by what they study.

And honestly, projects provide one of the best opportunities to demonstrate potential before entering the professional world.

A good project does more than showcase skills.

It helps students become the kind of people capable of turning ideas into reality
