Every student knows that building a project is only half the challenge.
The real test begins when you're standing in front of judges, faculty members, and other students, hoping they don't ask the one question you forgot to prepare for.
That was exactly my situation during one of our project presentations at NIAT - Sanjay Ghodawat University.
Our team had spent days working on the project. We had rehearsed the demo, divided speaking parts, and even prepared answers for technical questions.
We thought we were ready.
Everything Was Going Perfectly... Until One Question
Building a project is only half the battle. The real test is facing judges who ask the one question you never prepared for — that happened to me during a project presentation at NIAT.
I explained the problem statement, demonstrated our solution, and answered a couple of technical questions confidently.
Then one of the judges smiled and asked,
"If this project becomes a unicorn startup tomorrow, what's the first thing you'll buy?"
For two or three seconds, my entire team just looked at each other.
We had prepared for questions about technology, scalability, AI, databases, and business models.
Nobody prepared for that.
The audience started laughing because they could clearly see our confused faces.
The Answer That Saved the Moment
Instead of staying silent, I smiled and replied,
"First, I'd treat my entire team to a good dinner... because they survived this project with me."
The entire room laughed.
Even the judges smiled before continuing with the technical discussion.
That single funny moment instantly removed all the nervousness from the presentation.
I Learned Something Unexpected
That experience taught me that presentations aren't only about having the perfect answers.
They're also about staying calm when something unexpected happens.
Not every question is meant to test your knowledge.
Sometimes it's simply there to see how you react under pressure.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, I don't remember every technical question the judges asked.
But I definitely remember that one unexpected question that made the entire room laugh.
And honestly, it reminded me that sometimes a smile and a little confidence are just as important as knowing the right answer.
