Campus Survival Guide: Food, Weather and the Long Walk

Introduction

Surviving NIAT Vivekananda Global University in Jaipur needs three things: a solid pair of shoes, a water bottle you actually refill, and knowledge of where the food is.

I am a first-year B.Tech student here, and the first month felt like a lot. The campus is massive, the heat is no joke, and classes are not in the building next to the gate. But I worked out the moves, and it does not feel like a survival mission any more. Here is everything I wish somebody had told me in week one.

The Walk to the Department Is Longer Than You Think

Gate 1 is the main entrance, but our department is closer to Gate 3. Once you walk in you realise the campus is not compact at all.

Getting to the 4th floor of the NIAT block feels like a small hike, particularly on an empty stomach. I made that mistake on day one — skipped breakfast, turned up at 8:45 a.m., and by 9:30 I was genuinely counting the stairs.

The upside is the view. Once you are up there and settled into class you can see across the whole campus, and it makes the climb feel worth it.

Bring water, though. Always bring water.

Jaipur Heat and Dust Are Real

I am from Assam, so this hit differently.

During the monsoon the dust and sand get everywhere — not just on the road. It gets into your clothes, your bag, your laptop. An umbrella is not optional here, because the weather changes fast and you will regret not having one.

Summer heat is intense. Seriously intense. Staying hydrated is not advice, it is survival. I drink three to four bottles a day in peak summer and I still feel thirsty. Sugarcane juice and fresh fruit shakes are your best friends — there are juice stalls around campus and they are cheap and good.

Pro move: keep electrolyte water or nimbu paani in your bag. It is the difference between getting through afternoon classes and completely losing focus.

The Food Spots You Actually Need to Know

Start with what is on campus.

The Admin Block has a Nescafe outlet that is always crowded — good coffee, quick snacks, and a genuine student hangout. Right opposite is House of Feasters, a fast-food cafe run by Prateek Bhaiya, who is genuinely chill. If you like chai, this is your place. There is a WhatsApp group for foodies where they post House of Feasters discounts, and their late-night thali offer is real value.

Lawrence Cafe is close by too. A sweet lady runs it, the variety is legit, and you can get vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. It has become a hangout for a lot of students because the menu is flexible and the prices are reasonable.

If you want to go off campus, there are proper restaurants within reach:

  • Nescafe outlet (Admin Block) — quick coffee, snacks, student hub
  • House of Feasters — chai, late-night thali discounts
  • Lawrence Cafe — variety, veg and non-veg
  • Thor Restaurant — the best biryani off campus, if you eat non-veg
  • Fast Pizza — for when you need pizza at midnight
  • Flavours of Love — dinner; the Masala Chaap with Tandoori Roti is worth the trip

Small Things That Actually Make a Difference

None of this is complicated. All of it matters:

  • Carry an umbrella during monsoon
  • Get electrolyte water or juice in summer
  • Eat something before walking to the department
  • Stay hydrated like it is your job
  • Know where the food is, so you do not end up skipping meals

These sound obvious. But when you are tired after back-to-back classes, skipping them is what makes a day miserable.

Conclusion

The campus is good once you know the layout. The weather is manageable once you respect it. The food situation is better than I expected.

It is not that NIAT is hard to survive — you just have to be intentional about the basics. Once you know where to walk, what to eat and how to handle the weather, you stop surviving and start enjoying it. That is the point where campus actually starts feeling like home.
