Vizag Beyond the Beaches: A Student’s Look at Hills, History and Parks

RK Beach, Rushikonda Beach and Yarada Beach are familiar parts of Visakhapatnam’s identity. During my time exploring Vizag, though, I began noticing how much of the city lay beyond the coastline.

Hills, museums, parks and cultural landmarks offered different ways to understand the place where I was studying.

Looking Beyond the Coastline

Kailasagiri brought a hilltop perspective. Museums offered opportunities to think about naval and aviation history. Parks and green spaces created room to pause, while historical and cultural sites suggested stories I wanted to understand.

The coastline showed me one side of Vizag. Looking elsewhere helped me build a fuller picture.

Letting Places Raise Questions

I became curious about why landmarks were built, what had happened at particular sites and how the city had changed. Museums, monuments and historical places made those questions feel more immediate than simply reading a description.

Exploration also reminded me that familiar places can have layers we overlook. Knowing a city’s most famous attraction does not mean knowing the whole city.

Finding Nature Within the City

Even away from the beach, I noticed green hills, scenic views and peaceful outdoor spaces. A viewpoint, a museum and a park each offered something different: perspective, knowledge or a chance to relax.

I found myself appreciating nearby places more instead of assuming the most interesting experiences had to happen somewhere far away.

What Exploration Taught Me

The BRAVE Competition later reinforced a similar lesson for me: moving beyond familiar environments can open up new ideas and possibilities.

That is what exploring Vizag did. I still value its beaches, but my memories of the city now include more than the sea. They include the questions I asked, the places I noticed and the feeling of gradually getting to know somewhere more deeply.
